Merrymeeting Lecture Series: The Quill & The Bayonet

Thursday, July 21 from 5-7 p.m. with Lori-Suzanne Dell. $10. Advance registration required through Merrymeeting Adult Education.

Hour One: This lecture will discuss how Harriet Beecher Stowe came to be in Brunswick, Maine and her life on Federal Street while writing her history-altering novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin. The lecture will also cover her visits to Orr’s Island which led to her writing “The Pearl of Orr’s Island.” Hour Two: This lecture will cover Joshua Chamberlain’s decision to leave his professorship at Bowdoin College and seek an appointment to serve in the American Civil War and his time spent in boot camp at Camp Mason in South Portland, Maine, in the summer of 1862.
