Geology of Potts Point: A field trip with Rachel Beane
Friday, August 20, 4-5:30 p.m. at Potts Point Preserve. To get there, drive to the southern end of Rt. 123 (Harpswell Neck Road) and park at the pier. We will walk along private Potts Point Road to the preserve together. Advance registration required. Limited to 15 participants. This event is now full. Email Julia at email@example.com to be placed on the waiting list.
For this walk, we will observe the rocks along the shores of Pott’s Point. Geologist Rachel Beane will help us to identify minerals and rock structures, and share the tectonic processes that led to their formation. Please be prepared to walk on uneven wet ground. Bring a hand lens or magnifying glass if you have one, otherwise we will have a few to loan.
Dr. Rachel Beane is a geology professor in the Earth and Oceanographic Science Department at Bowdoin College. She has conducted field research in New Zealand, Russia, Kazakhstan, Greece, the western U.S., and Maine. She is a former trustee of the Harpswell Heritage Land Trust and now serves on the program committee.
