Winter Solstice Lantern Walk 2017
Thurs., Dec. 21, 5-6 p.m.
Houghton Graves Park, 1714 Harpswell Islands Rd, Orr’s Island
Celebrate the winter solstice with a lantern walk and bonfire at Harpswell Heritage Land Trust’s Houghton Graves Park on Orr’s Island. Welcome the lengthening days with light, song and community.
We will walk along a short, easy trail lined with lanterns and luminaria. You are encouraged to bring a lantern to carry along the trail. At the end of the trail, we will warm up with songs, a fire, hot cocoa and cookies.
All are welcome at this free, family-friendly event. Bring a flashlight. No real flames, please. We will provide LED lights to place in the lanterns. Please register in advance. Space is limited. Click here to register or contact Julia McLeod at email@example.com or 207-837-9613.
Making a Winter Solstice Lantern
There are several opportunities to make your own lantern ahead of time. You are welcome to make a lantern even if you don’t plan to come to the lantern walk, and you are welcome to come to the lantern walk without a handmade lantern in hand. We want to make it easy for you to celebrate the solstice!
Fourth and fifth grade students at Harpswell Community School and students at Harpswell Community Nursery School will have an opportunity to make lanterns at school.
There will be a lantern making workshop on Dec. 10 from 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. at Harpswell Heritage Land Trust, 153 Harpswell Neck Road. It won’t take the whole time to make a lantern, and you don’t have to show up right at the beginning of the workshop. All ages welcome.
If none of these lantern making opportunities work for you, we’ve included links to instructions for making your own lantern. There are many options, and we encourage you to be creative! Click on the images below for information about how to make each type of lantern.
