Friday, Dec. 21, 2018 from 5-6 p.m.
Houghton Graves Park, 1714 Harpswell Islands Rd, Orr’s Island

Celebrate the winter solstice with a lantern walk and bonfire. Welcome the lengthening days with light, song and community. Walk along a short, easy trail lined with lanterns and luminaria. You are encouraged to bring a lantern to carry. At the end of the trail, warm up with songs, fire, hot cocoa and sweet treats.

All are welcome at this free, family-friendly event. Advance registration is requested to help us plan. Click here to register or contact Julia McLeod at outreach@hhltmaine.org or 207-837-9613.

Bring warm clothes, a flashlight, your lantern (optional, see ideas below), and a travel mug for your cocoa (to help us use fewer disposable cups). We will provide LED lights to place in your lanterns.

You are welcome to show up at any time during the hour. The lantern walk is self-guided. There will be cocoa, cookies and a campfire for the whole time, and there will be music for at least the first half hour (if it’s very cold our musician’s hands get cold).

Thank you to the Harpswell Community School PTO for co-sponsoring the event and to Lowe’s for donating the fire pits.

Make a Winter Solstice Lantern

There are several opportunities to make your own lantern ahead of time. You are welcome to make a lantern even if you don’t plan to come to the lantern walk, and you are welcome to come to the lantern walk without a handmade lantern in hand. We want to make it easy for you to celebrate the solstice! All lantern making opportunities are free!

Visit Harpswell Heritage Land Trust’s table to make your own lantern with guided help at the Cundy’s Harbor Christmas Fair on Saturday, December 1 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Cundy’s Harbor Community Hall, 837 Cundy’s Harbor Road, Harpswell

Come to a lantern making workshop offered by Harpswell Heritage Land Trust on Saturday, December 8 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at the Orr’s Island Library, 1699 Harpswell Islands Road, Orr’s Island. Santa will be at the Orr’s Island Library from 10-11:30 a.m. during the lantern making!

Lantern making materials and instructions are available for self-directed use at the Orr’s Island Library and the Cundy’s Harbor Library from Dec. 8-21.

Fourth graders at Harpswell Community School and preschoolers at Harpswell Community Nursery School will make lanterns during school to bring home.

If none of these lantern making opportunities work for you, we’ve included links to instructions for making your own lantern. There are many options, and we encourage you to be creative! Click on the images below for information about how to make each type of lantern.
