Celebrate the winter solstice with a lantern walk and bonfire. Welcome the lengthening days with light, song and community. Walk along a short, easy trail lined with lanterns and luminaria. You are encouraged to bring a lantern to carry. At the end of the trail, warm up with songs, fire, hot cocoa and sweet treats.

All are welcome at this free, family-friendly event.

Bring warm clothes, a flashlight, your lantern (optional, see ideas below), and a travel mug for your cocoa (to help us use fewer disposable cups). We will provide LED lights to place in your lanterns.

You are welcome to show up at any time during the hour. The lantern walk is self-guided. There will be cocoa, cookies and a campfire for the whole time, and there will be music for at least the first half hour.

This event is co-sponsored by the Harpswell Community School PTO.

Make a Winter Solstice Lantern

There are several opportunities to get help making your own lantern ahead of time. You are welcome to make a lantern even if you don’t plan to come to the lantern walk, and you are welcome to come to the lantern walk without a handmade lantern in hand. We want to make it easy for you to celebrate the solstice!

All fourth grade students at Harpswell Community School and preschool students at Harpswell Community Nursery School will make paper lanterns during school with HHLT’s Outreach Director, Julia McLeod.

Take home a free paper lantern making kit by visiting Harpswell Heritage Land Trust’s table at the Cundy’s Harbor Holiday Craft Fair on Saturday, December 7 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Cundy’s Harbor Community Hall, 837 Cundy’s Harbor Road. HHLT will also be selling scenic and historic note cards, junior ranger activity books, hats and Nature Notes from Maine books. Support your local land trust while getting a gift your friends and family will love!

Come to a free lantern making workshop offered by Harpswell Heritage Land Trust on Saturday, December 7 from 10-11:30 a.m. at Harpswell Heritage Land Trust, 153 Harpswell Neck Road. Advance registration is requested to help us plan. Click here to register.

We’ll provide materials and help you create three different styles of lanterns.

  • The first is made out of thick paper, which is painted, punched with patterned holes and folded into the shape of a lantern.
  • The second is made out of a reused jar or bottle (glass or plastic) with scraps of tissue paper, ribbon, leaves, lace and/or twine glued around its sides. Participants are encouraged to bring their own jars or bottles and any decorations they’re excited to use.
  • The third is made with glue and tissue paper around a balloon.

If none of these lantern making opportunities work for you, we’ve included links to instructions for making your own lantern. There are many options, and we encourage you to be creative! Click on the images below for information about how to make each type of lantern.
