Backyard Birder: How to Feed Birds the Right Way

EVENT POSTPONED TO 4/9

Join Derek Lovitch of Freeport Wild Bird Supply for this informative program covering everything you need to create a perfect avian haven in your backyard! We’ll learn how to supplement the natural environment to draw more birds to your yard and keep them happy and healthy. By offering the best bird seed in different feeder styles and incorporating native plants that offer food and shelter, we’ll learn how to have more birds and get more enjoyment from our backyards. We’ll cover the basics of the successful bird feeding station, including what to feed and what not to feed, types of feeders, problem-solving, and yes, of course, squirrel-proofing (it CAN be done!). We’ll also spend some time discussing bird houses, offering water, and attracting birds with native plants in order to have a well-rounded bird sanctuary. This program is free and open to all. Advance registration is requested.

Derek and his wife Jeannette own and operate Freeport Wild Bird Supply, a retail store that caters to birders of all levels. The store serves as a vehicle for Derek to share his enthusiasm for birding, birds, and bird conservation. The store is also the home base for a growing tour guiding operation. He is the author of two books: How to be a Better Birder and Birdwatching in Maine: A Site Guide. He was also the “Tools of the Trade” Department Editor for Birding magazine for six years. His writing has appeared in Birding magazine, Birder’s World, Bird Observer, Bird Watcher’s Digest, NJ Audubon, North American Birds, and others. Derek also enjoys hiking, exploring natural areas, developing his native plant garden, good food, and beer.
