A Morning at Nature Day Camp

Last week was the first week of Nature Day Camp, and the trails are full of excited chatter, new adventures, and budding friendships.

Making friends at Nature Day Camp

I had the chance to spend the morning with our campers last Wednesday, and the fun began the moment parents headed out. Campers gathered for morning songs and announcements before lining up for what might be the most important ritual of summer camp: generous applications of sunscreen and bug spray!

The Pathfinders (ages 6–8) kicked off their day with a lively game of Evolution—a fun twist on rock-paper-scissors that had everyone laughing. Next came watercolor painting inspired by the natural world. Most campers painted trees, flowers, and animals, while one young artist decided a planet belonged in the mix. Nature, after all, is everywhere! When I asked what they liked best about camp, their answers were refreshingly honest: “I like going on hikes and doing art,” said one camper. Another simply replied, “I like the nature.” And perhaps the most relatable answer of all? “Snack.”

Later, I joined the Trekkers (ages 9–12) for a hike at Anna M. Tondreau Preserve along the Cove Trail. I happily took my place as the caboose of the group, walking alongside a crew of girls who had all given themselves silly nicknames. Their counselor, Zoe, had been renamed “Miss Twinkle Toes,” a title she wore proudly as the group explored the trail with curiosity and laughter.

Watching our counselors in action was just as inspiring as watching the campers. Zoe, Nora, Gracelynn, Avery, Noah, and Brandon have created an environment where kids feel comfortable being themselves. They balance fun, kindness, and nature exploration in a way that makes Nature Day Camp something truly special.

After just one morning, it was easy to see why campers look forward to coming back each year. Here’s to a summer filled with muddy shoes, new discoveries, and, of course, plenty of snacks.
