Selling Land
You may preserve your land or building by selling it to the Trust. Due to limited funds, the Trust considers purchases at market values only for exceptional parcels or buildings that face an imminent threat of development or demolition. Two such special places were:
- a 19 acre wooded parcel fronting on high value marine habitat at the gateway to Harpswell Neck which was proposed for subdivision.
- a 3 acre field with a signature view on Bailey Island whose development would have substantially changed the character of the island.
A bargain sale, where the property is sold at less than its fair market value, is another way of selling your land to preserve it. Bargain sales offer tax benefits to the seller. The Trust acquired a 93 acre parcel on Great Island with significant habitat values and a rare bog in this way utilizing a large anonymous contribution.
