Join us for a birding tour of Bailey Island with Derek Lovitch, of Freeport Wild Bird Supply! Early November is “Rarity Season” in Maine, when we can expect the unexpected. Geography, habitat, and weather can concentrate some of these vagrants, and Bailey Island is perfectly situated to “trap” late/lingering and wayward visitors. There are no guarantees at this time of year, and the birding can actually be pretty slow, but it only takes one bird to make it an unforgettable trip! We’ll begin at Land’s End and caravan to several hotspots, including HHLT properties. We’ll discuss the mechanisms of migration and vagrancy, and learn why Bailey Island is so exciting at this time of year!

Derek Lovitch has led tours throughout North America from Alaska’s Pribilof Islands to Hawai’i but has guided extensively here in Maine for over 20 years. He also worked as a Senior Leader for WINGS Birding, Inc. for over a decade, but now guides exclusively in Northern New England, from Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom to Downeast Maine. Along with publications in numerous birding magazines, he is the author of How to Be a Better Birder (2012), Birdwatching in Maine: A Site Guide (2017), and the revised 2nd Edition, Birdwatching in Maine: The Complete Site Guide (2024).
