Guided Nature Walk: The Forest Floor
This is part of HHLT’s new series of Guided Nature Walks led by local and visiting naturalists.
Join March’s Nature Walk, “The Forest Floor,” at Long Reach Preserve led by local Maine Master Naturalist, Michael Birmingham. This walk is a prequel to our upcoming series of Vernal Pool programs.
Step softly into the woods and discover a world most people walk right past. On this guided forest walk, we’ll peel back the layers of leaves, needles, and fallen branches to reveal how the forest floor powers the entire ecosystem—recycling nutrients, storing moisture, and creating shelter for countless living things. We’ll meet some of the forest’s most fascinating residents along the way. As a prequel to our upcoming series on Vernal Pools, we’ll emphasize reptiles and amphibians with their incredible adaptations that make them perfectly suited to life in the leaf litter. Expect hands-on exploration, surprising discoveries, and a fresh appreciation for how something as simple as a rotting log or a pile of leaves helps keep our forests healthy and alive. Lace up your boots, bring your curiosity, and get ready to see the forest from the ground up.
This walk is limited to 15 people.
